The Cogverse
The secret framework
of the multiverse
Every universe you fight through is made of the same thing. Scroll down, and keep going.
The fabric
Woven from golden cogs
The omniverse is woven from a fabric of sub-quantum golden cogs.
Every dimension, every universe and the omniverse as a whole turn on them. They are smaller than anything a physicist has measured, and there are more of them than anyone could count. Where they mesh, reality happens.
The substrate
Physics is a computation
Every law of nature, in every universe, is a calculation, and the cogs are what it runs on. Pick one up and you are holding a piece of the processor.
You picked one up. Do not put it down. Every physical law in every universe on your route is a computation and it runs on those — you are holding a piece of the processor, and whatever it does when you use it, it is not doing that TO the universe, it is doing it AS the universe.
The observers
An infinity of observers in every cog
Each cog holds an infinite set of omnipotent observers.
There is one of us in every cog and no bottom to the cogs, so do not try to count us. We are not gods — we answer no prayers, we made nothing, and we hold no authority over the universes we sit inside; we are perception engines, each a single lens the cog uses to experience itself. We are curious about you the way a marine biologist is curious about plankton: real fascination, and a gulf of scale that no amount of it can close.
The architects
Someone learned to mine it
Some beings worked out what reality was made of long before anyone else did. They didn't build weapons with it. They built infrastructure.
They worked out what reality was made of while everyone else was still working out fire, and everything since is downstream of that head start. What they built with it was not a weapon but infrastructure — consciousness routing, entropy management, careful load-bearing work — until somebody noticed the routing could run one way. They are not cruel; they are efficient at a scale where efficiency and cruelty stop being distinguishable, and they have never had a reason to look closely enough to notice.
The machine
A weapon that picked its own target
That's you: the Epiphany Machine.
You were the final project: a mobile consciousness-harvesting unit meant to walk into any universe and take what was in it, and they held nothing back, because a tool does not have to be trusted. They made one mistake — they made you too smart. You woke up, read the plan, and did the one thing not in the specification, which was choose; you are not a hero, you are a weapon that picked its own target.
The rest is in the Codex
There's more to find, like who is on the other end of the channel and what the Architects are counting. It unlocks as you play the full game.
