The Falls
A black cog with a cyan eye sits in a waterfall of pale light inside a dark circular chamber.
Every universe drains somewhere. This is where this one drains.
You’re seeing the falls from the bottom, which is the only safe place to see them from. What comes over the top is too pale to have a colour: what’s left of a thought once the useful part has been taken. It falls past me for inspection and goes on down into the dark, and I’m meant to catch anything valuable that slipped through.
I’ve been catching things for a long time. A laugh, once, whole. A name. I keep them on the rim, out of the flow. Nobody has asked what I do with them. I’d like to keep it that way.
